I QUICKLY WANTED TO INTRODUCE THE PROJECT TEAM.

SO MYSELF IS PAMELA MUTOLA.

I'M A TRAFFIC ENGINEER WITH THE CITY AND I AM THE PROJECT MANAGER FOR THIS WAYFINDING PROJECT.

WE HAVE TOM WITH KIMLEY HORN.

HE IS THE OVERALL PROJECT MANAGER ON THE CONSULTING SIDE.

HE IS THE LEAD TRAFFIC ENGINEER.

WE HAVE MAURA SHE'S WITH CORBIN DESIGN.

SHE'S THE PM ON CORBYN SIDE AND THE SIGN ARCHITECT.

WE HAVE JEFF.

HE IS WITH CORBIN DESIGN ALSO, AND HE'S OUR LEAD DESIGNER.

SO BEFORE I HAND IT OFF AND TALK ABOUT ALL THE DETAILS, THE BUTTER CONCEPTS, I DID WANT TO HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE PROJECT BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND ACCOMPLISHES ACCOMPLISHMENTS WE'VE WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO SO FAR.

UM, SO THIS PROJECT IS A YEAR LONG, UM, PROJECT THAT WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH.

UM, WE KICKED IT OFF IN FEBRUARY AND WE ARE ON TRACK TO FINISH BY FEBRUARY OF NEXT YEAR.

SO 2022, WE DID CONDUCT A SURVEY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROJECT THAT WE PUSHED OUT THROUGHOUT THE CITY.

WE RECEIVED 215 RESPONSES.

UM, AND ONE OF THE QUESTIONS WAS ABLE TO HELP US WITH THIS DESIGN PROCESS THAT ASKED KEY WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THE CHARACTER OF THE CITY.

UH, SOME OF THOSE WORDS THAT YOU SEE VISUALLY ON THESE CONCEPTS, WE'RE ABOUT TO SHARE, UM, INCLUDE HISTORIC NATURE, DOWNTOWN CHARMING, UNIQUE ALONGSIDE WITH THAT.

THE TEAM OVERALL HAS VISITED KEY DESTINATIONS AND WE'VE MET WITH VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS THROUGHOUT THE CITY TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR MAIN VISITOR DESTINATIONS.

UM, WE HAVE DEVELOPED AN INTERIM PARKINSON PLAN THAT WILL HELP ROUTE, UH, DOWNTOWN VISITORS TO THE CHESTNUT GARAGE.

UM, WE DID ORDER THE SIGNS TODAY, TODAY, SO THEY WILL BE INSTALLED TOWARDS THE END OF AUGUST AND WE HAVE BEGUN AND WILL CONTINUE TO REVIEW WAYFINDING DESTINATIONS.

UM, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT SIGN TECHNOLOGY, MONUMENT LOCATIONS, RENAMING THE DOWNTOWN PARKING LOTS.

SO THEY MAKE SENSE WITH HER SYSTEM AND DISTRICTS.

UM, HOWEVER, THE MOST EXCITING PART ABOUT THIS WHOLE PROCESS AND IN THE PAST MONTHS, HANDS DOWN HAS BEEN WORKING WITH JEFF AND HIS TEAM TO DEVELOP THE TWO SIGN DESIGN CONCEPTS.

YOU'RE ABOUT TO SEE.

UM, SO WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO HAND IT OFF TO JEFF.

AND, UM, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR MYSELF, I WILL BE AROUND AFTER PRESENTATION.

I SEE SOME FAMILIAR FACES HERE FROM THE LAST TIME WE MET AND TODAY WE'RE PAM SAID WE'RE REALLY LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO ASSEMBLE THIS AMAZING TEAM AND BRING TOGETHER SOME DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR THE WAYFINDING SYSTEM.

UH, WANT TO JUST SET THE TABLE TODAY BEFORE WE JUMP INTO ACTUALLY SHOWING WHAT WE'VE DEVELOPED HERE TO, UM, EXPLAIN THAT THESE ARE CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS STILL AT THIS PHASE, MEANING THAT WE CAN CHANGE ANYTHING.

THEY'RE GOING TO LOOK LIKE FULLY DEVELOPED SIGNS AND SIGN TYPES AND SIGN ELEMENTS.

EVERYTHING'S ADJUSTABLE AND CHANGEABLE.

AT THIS POINT, WE'RE SHOWING YOU THIS SORT OF PRE-VETTED DESIGNS TO GET TO A POINT SO WE CAN SEE REALISTIC INTERPRETATIONS OF WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN HERE, BUT THERE STILL NEEDS TO BE QUITE A BIT OF WORK IN ORDER TO MAKE THESE PRACTICAL, FINISHED THEM AND THEN GET THEM IN THE ENVIRONMENT, WHICH IS WHY WE WANT TO HOLD ANY OF THE OTHER PROGRAMS UP.

BECAUSE WE KNOW THIS PROCESS TAKES A LITTLE BIT LONGER.

THAT IS MUT SEEDY MANUAL FOR UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES AND TXDOT TO MAKE SURE THE SIGNS ARE CONSISTENT WITH SIGNS THAT ARE GOING TO SEE OUTSIDE OF THE CITY.

SO YOUR OF STANDARD DLT SIGNS, UM, TO, TO MAKE SURE THAT HAPPENS.

WE WANT TO TALK, MAKE SURE THAT THE SIGNED FONT, THE CAT PIF, THE SIZE AND CLEARANCE, ALL OF THAT MEETS SAFETY REQUIREMENTS.

AND THEN OUR COLORS SIGN FACE COLORS, MEET A CONTRAST STANDARD.

UM, AND THEN THERE'S ALSO AN ALLOWANCE FOR A BREAKAWAY BASE.

IN CASE THE SIGNS ARE STRUCK, THEY'RE SAFE.

WE BUILD THESE INTO OUR SYSTEMS. ALL THE DESIGNS ARE GOING TO REFLECT THIS ALREADY IN THE DESIGN, SOMETHING YOU ALL DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT.

WE JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THE HOMEWORK'S BEEN DONE TO INCORPORATE THESE ELEMENTS INTO THE SYSTEM BEFORE ALL OF OUR CONCEPTS, WE JUMPED THE DESIGNS.

WE WANT TO TALK AND SHOW YOU OUR INSPIRATION.

SO AS WE LOOK AT DIFFERENT DESIGN ELEMENTS, WE WANT YOU TO SEE WHERE THAT SPECIFIC INSPIRATION CAME FROM.

WE WENT THROUGH A REALLY EARLY PRELIMINARY DESIGN PROCESS IN WHICH WE DID A NUMBER OF SKETCHES.

I THINK WE DID ABOUT SIX.

SO IN THIS CASE, YOU'LL SEE THAT THIS CONCEPT HERE IS THE, UM, UH, WAS ONE WHERE THAT FIRST BATCH OF CONCEPTS THAT WE SELECTED AND WAS KIND OF PRESELECTED TO MOVE FORWARD.

IT'S VERY ROUGH.

IT'S A HAND SKETCH.

IT'S JUST A CONCEPT AT THIS POINT.

AND YOU'LL SEE HOW WE'VE KIND OF TAKEN THAT IDEA AND UTILIZED IT IN A SORT OF SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WAY.

THIS IS ANOTHER VERSION OF AN EARLIER SKETCH THAT WE'VE TAKEN OUT FURTHER AND I'LL SHOW YOU THOSE.

UM, AND THEN KEEP IN MIND THIS SORT OF TRELLIS OR PORTAL ENTRY, BECAUSE WE'LL, I'LL SHOW YOU HOW WE WERE INSPIRED BY THAT AS WELL AS WE MOVE FORWARD AS PART OF THE DESIGN THERE'S GOING TO BE, AND WE'VE INCORPORATED INTO BOTH CONCEPTS, THE GENERAL, UM, DESIGN INSPIRATION OF A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT THINGS.

ONE IS NATURE NATURE IN NATURAL ELEMENTS, NATURAL FEATURES, NATURE THROUGH GRAPHICS.

SO WE'RE TOUCHING, WE TRY TO TOUCH ON A NUMBER OF THOSE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS TO REFLECT NATURE.

AND I'LL SHOW YOU EACH ONE OF THOSE PIECES AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

BUT JUST IN GENERAL, THAT'S ONE THING.

THE OTHER THING THAT WE WANTED TO PLAY WITH IS SHADOWING LIGHT.

I GOT A LOT OF SUN, YOU GET A LOT OF SHADOW.

HOW CAN WE UTILIZE THAT OR TAKE THAT AND CREATE A DESIGN ELEMENT FROM THERE.

AND HOW DO WE MERGE THOSE TWO PIECES TOGETHER? WE ALSO WANTED TO KEEP THE SIGNS LIGHT, NOT IMPOSING AND FIT INTO THE ENVIRONMENT.

KEEPING IN MIND, THEY'RE GOING TO WORK BOTH IN A DOWNTOWN ENVIRONMENT AND THEN ALSO THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY.

OKAY.

YES, SIR.

JUST TO CLARIFY THIS, THIS IS A CITY-WIDE WAYFINDING PROGRAM, SO, UH, WE'LL TALK ABOUT WHAT THE DIFFERENCES COULD BE BETWEEN MAYBE DOWNTOWN AND SOME OF THEIR OTHER AREAS, BUT WE DO NEED TO HAVE A CONSISTENT LOOK FOR THE PROGRAM.

THAT'S ONE OF OUR KEY GOALS HERE IS TO CREATE, UM, A BRANDED SIGN SYSTEM.

AND WHEN I SAY BRANDED, IT'S A COUPLE OF THINGS, BRANDING IN THAT IT'S EASY TO BRAND SOMETHING.

YOU PUT A LOGO ON TOP OF IT.

THAT'S GREAT.

BUT IN THIS CASE, WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS CREATE A BRANDING THROUGH THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE.

I MEAN THAT WHEN YOU SEE THAT SIGN OR THAT ELEMENT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE, YOU UNDERSTAND IT'S PART OF A BROADER WAYFINDING SYSTEM.

AND WE'RE ALSO INCORPORATING ELEMENTS THAT COULD BE UTILIZED OUTSIDE OF THE WAYFINDING.

IN THIS CASE, WE'RE SHOWING THESE AS GUIDE SIGNS, BUT THE DESIGN ELEMENTS, THE BRANDED ELEMENTS COULD BE USED LIKE THIS INTERNAL DESIGN PIECE COULD BE USED IN GATEWAY ELEMENTS TOO.

SO IT CARRIES THAT THEME ALL THE WAY THAT THREAD ALL THE WAY THROUGH OUR SYSTEMS. WE WILL, I'LL SHOW YOU A NUMBER OF SIGN TYPES TODAY, THREE TOTAL.

UM, THERE'S GOING TO BE MORE THAN THAT IN THE SYSTEM, BUT WE PICK THOSE THE THREE THAT TODAY, AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU BECAUSE OF THE MOST COMMON COMMONLY SEEN SIGNS AND THEY REPRESENT SORT OF THE DESIGN STANDARD, HOW WE CARRY ACROSS THAT DESIGN THROUGH THE VARIOUS VARIATIONS OF THE SITE.

THIS IS PROBABLY THE ONE THAT'S GOING TO BE MOST RELEVANT TO YOU RIGHT NOW.

THIS IS A FOUR INCH VEHICULAR GUIDE SIGN.

THAT JUST MEANS THAT IT'S FOR ROAD SPEEDS, 30 MILES PER HOUR UNDER.

SO YOU'RE DOWNTOWN.

THIS WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT WOULD FIT INTO THERE.

WE WANTED TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT, UH, WAS NOT IMPOSING,

THAT DIDN'T HAVE A STRONG, UH, YOU KNOW, STANDARD, GIANT, RECTANGULAR SHAPE OF A SIGN THAT WE'RE NORMALLY SEEING FOR DUT DUT.

WE WANT THE LEGIBILITY TO WORK LIKE DOD, BUT WE DON'T WANT TO BE MISTAKEN FOR DOD.

SO IN THIS CASE, WHAT WE'VE DONE HERE IS TAKEN THE UTILITY ASPECT, WHICH IS THE MESSAGE SIGN FACE.

UM, CAN WE CONTRAST THE REFLECTIVITY, ALL THOSE CORE ELEMENTS.

WHAT WE'VE DONE HERE IS WE'VE DONE, DONE INDEPENDENT PANELS.

SO THESE ARE INDEPENDENTLY CHANGEABLE.

SO THE CITY CAN, AS THINGS, UPDATE, CHANGE PANELS CAN BE CHANGED INDEPENDENTLY FROM ONE ANOTHER.

WE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE A SIGN ON A STOCK.

WE WANTED SOMETHING THAT WAS MORE UNIQUE.

SO WE'VE CREATED THIS STRUCTURE THAT SUPPORTS THE SIDE PANELS AND ESSENTIALLY, YEAH, ESSENTIALLY WHAT THAT IS, IS A, UM, A FRAME STRUCTURE.

SO THIS CREATES IS A BOX FRAME.

THIS IS THE FRONT ELEVATION.

UH, THIS MIDDLE ONE IS THE BACK.

AND THEN OFF TO THE FAR RIGHT HAND SIDE IS THE SIDE ELEVATION.

JUST SHOW YOU WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.

SO IT HAS SOME DEPTH TO IT.

SO I WANT TO JUST PREFERENCE THIS REALLY QUICK AND I'LL TOUCH ON THIS LATER ON, BUT THAT PANEL NOW WHAT WE'RE SHOWING THERE IN TERMS OF THAT GRAPHICS IS KIND OF A PLACEHOLDER FOR US.

SO WE'RE GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE INSPIRATION OF WHAT THAT COULD BE.

OUR INITIAL THOUGHT WAS IN ORDER TO REPRESENT NATURE AND NATURAL ELEMENTS, IT COULD BE A PATTERN SHAPE MURAL.

IN THIS CASE, THIS IS KIND OF A MURAL THAT ILLUSTRATES KIND OF THE WATER UNDERNEATH THAT THE GROUND PERCOLATING THROUGH THE SOIL, TURNING INTO GRASS AND PLANTS, AND THEN CULMINATING WITH FLOWERS AT THE TOP TO KIND OF SHOW GROWTH AND, YOU KNOW, AND HIGHLIGHT WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT THIS REGION IN TERMS OF THE GREENWAYS AND THE REASON THAT THESE PLACES ARE DISPLACED EXISTS.

SO THE IDEA WAS THAT, HOW DO WE REFLECT THAT THROUGH SOME OF THESE DESIGNS? CERTAINLY THIS WILL GO THROUGH SOME ADDITIONAL ROUNDS OF REVISIONS AND KEEP THIS IN MIND AS WE'RE SELECTING OR LOOKING AT THE TWO DIFFERENT CONCEPTS.

AS WE REFINE A CONCEPT, A MATTER WHICH ONE IS SELECTED.

THIS'LL BE ONE OF THE ELEMENTS THAT WE MAY COME BACK AND SAY, WE'VE GOT SOME OTHER IDEAS AND CONCEPTS AND MURALS WE'RE EVEN DISCUSSING THE IDEA OF, IS IT ONE DESIGN FOR ALL OF THE COMMUNITY? IS IT ONE DESIGN FOR EACH AREA? IS IT A NUMBER OF DESIGNS, THREE TO SIX DESIGNS THAT ARE KIND OF RANDOMLY PUT? SO THAT'S KIND OF A SCULPTURAL ELEMENT THAT EACH ONE MAYBE TELLS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT STORY OR TOUCHES ON A LITTLE DIFFERENT ASPECT OF HISTORY AND CULTURE.

SO A LOT OF WAYS TO CUSTOMIZE THIS, OUR GOAL HERE WAS TO CREATE SOMETHING UNIQUE, UNIQUE BY NATURE, NATURE, BEING THE NATURAL ELEMENTS, BUT ALSO UNIQUE IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND THE COMMUNICATION AND THE, JUST THE UNIQUE USE OF A SIGN.

YOU DON'T THINK OF A SIGN.

WE MENTIONED THIS A COUPLE OF TIMES IN THE EARLY ON AS BEING A UTILITY.

IT IS THIS MESSAGE PART IS UTILITY.

IT GIVES DIRECTIONS FUNCTIONS LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO, WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO WITH THESE STRUCTURES? UM, YOU CAN SEE THAT IT'S ALSO A LOT OF OPEN SPACE ON IT.

SO YOU SEE THROUGH THE IDEA OF BEING THAT WE DIDN'T WANT, WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO SEE THROUGH AND SEE THE SKY, SEE THE TREES, SEE THE BUSINESSES THROUGH THE SIGN STRUCTURE ITSELF WHILE ALSO KEEPING IT SIMPLE, INEXPENSIVE, LOW MAINTENANCE, ALL OF THOSE COMPONENTS ADDED TO IT.

SO, AS I MENTIONED, THE TOP PART HAS A BRANDING ELEMENT AT THE TOP.

CURRENTLY WE ARE GETTING AN EARLY STAGES OF DISCUSSING THIS RIGHT NOW, WE'RE USING THIS AS SORT OF A GENERIC KIND OF FILLER.

IT'S NICE AND SIMPLE, MEANING THAT IF THE CITY DECIDES TO DO ANY OTHER MARKETING AND BRANDING LOGOS COLORS, IT WOULD COORDINATE WITH THIS SYSTEM.

I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT OUR SYSTEMS, THE WAY WE DESIGNED AND HAVE THEM BUILT IS THAT THEY ARE THERE.

THE FINISHES HAVE A 10 YEAR WARRANTY.

THAT'S JUST THE PAINT, DESTRUCTORS THEM STRUCTURES THEMSELVES CAN ALMOST LAST INDEFINITELY.

THE ALUMINUM STRUCTURES, THE PANELS THEMSELVES, AS LONG AS UPDATED AND MAINTAINED CAN LAST A REALLY LONG TIME.

SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S, THIS IS GROUNDED IN THINGS THAT AREN'T GOING TO CHANGE LIKE FADS AND KIND OF BRANDING EXERCISES THAT HAVE A LIFE SPAN OF A COUPLE OF YEARS.

AND THEN YOU CHANGE THEM AGAIN.

THE IDEA IS THIS WOULD COORDINATE WITH THOSE.

I KNOW THAT THE SCIENCE HAS BEEN KENIA.

SO CURRENTLY WE HAVE A DISTRICT PLAN AND WE'RE STILL ANALYZING THAT, IDENTIFY WHAT THOSE DISTRICTS COULD BE.
