[00:42:15]

UM,

[00:42:16]

BUILDING

[Update on the new Municipal Complex and the Ice House]

[00:42:17]

FOR

[00:42:17]

THE

[00:42:17]

CITY

[00:42:17]

HALLS.

[00:42:21]

OH,

[00:42:25]

SO

[00:42:26]

THAT WOULD BE THE SEVEN MILLIONS, THE OVERALL COST OF CITY HALL.

YEAH.

I'M JUST, I'M I'M NOT TRYING TO BE, YOU KNOW, DIFFICULT, BUT IT JUST SEEMS THAT PART OF THE DECISION I THINK IS PROBABLY BECAUSE THERE'S ALSO SOME NEEDS FOR THE CITY HALL.

I E THE, THE RAILROAD TRACKS, I E IF WE WERE TO DO THIS WITH PUSH CONSTRUCTION ON CITY HALL.

SO IT'S NOT ALL THE COSTS OF THE ACTUAL ICE HOUSE.

IT'S ALSO THE COST OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY HALL.

YES.

YEAH.

BUT THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY THE FAULT OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE ICE HOUSE.

THAT'S JUST THE WAY CONSTRUCTION GOES TYPICALLY, RIGHT.

AT TRACK BACK AND DESERVE THIS BUILDING PROBABLY PLUS A COUPLE OF WINDOWS FOR, SO WHEN WAS THE ACTUAL, MY QUESTION IS, IS YOUR YOU'RE WORKING WITH AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM.

YOU'VE GOT AN OLD HISTORIC BUILDING.

I'M KIND OF CURIOUS WHY IT TOOK SO LONG TO ASSESS, LIKE, IF I WERE GOING ON THAT JOB SITE, I WOULD SAY, OKAY, YOU KNOW, WE'VE GOT EMPTY GROUND AND WE'VE GOT THIS OLD HISTORIC BUILDING.

MAYBE WE SHOULD LOOK AT THE HISTORIC BUILDING FIRST TO, UH, DETERMINE THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF IT BEFORE WE CREATE PLANS THAT INCLUDE THE HISTORIC BUILDING.

AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO FIND OUT WE CAN'T DO IT WHERE, YOU KNOW, IT'S GOING TO CAUSE THIS KIND OF YEAH.

YEAH.

BECAUSE REALLY THAT WAS KIND OF THE, TO ME, THAT'S THE THING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED INTO.

IT'S A REAL SHAME THAT WASN'T CHECKED INTO A LOT EARLIER AND THEY BE PREVENTED SOME OF THIS.

I REMEMBER WHEN OUTDOOR ACTIVITY, I DON'T KNOW, I WASN'T AT THE TABLE TO TALK ABOUT THIS PROJECT.

AND I REMEMBER EVERYONE TO THE ICE HOUSE STRUCTURE BECAUSE I WAS SO EXCITED THAT WE'RE GOING TO INCORPORATE IT.

HOW WAS IT BEFORE WE EVEN DID THAT FIRST SLIDE? THAT WAS ALWAYS THE

[00:45:01]

WELL, AND I DON'T, I DON'T KNOW HOW THE FOLKS, YOU KNOW, ON THE EAST SIDE OF MCKINNEY, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REFERRING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS, BUT THERE'S A WHOLE CULTURE OVER THERE.

AND, UM, THEY'RE SEEING THIS GENTRIFICATION OF THEIR AREA.

NOW THEY'VE HAD THE WHOLE BLOCK TORN DOWN ALL OF THOSE OLD BUILDINGS, WHICH, YOU KNOW, MAYBE THEY HAD TO COME DOWN.

MAYBE THEY DIDN'T, THEY'RE SEEING THEIR SILOS BEING PAINTED, YOU KNOW, WITH ART, BUT THAT'S NOT, THAT'S NOT THE WAY THAT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD USED TO BE.

AND NOW THE ONE BUILDING THAT THIS COMMUNITY OVER THERE, THAT'S, IT'S THE TALLEST BUILDING OVER THERE.

IT'S KIND OF THE STANDOUT.

NOW WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THEM TO, YOU KNOW, ARE WE BEING COGNIZANT OF THAT SIDE OF MCKINNEY AND PERHAPS THE THINGS THAT MANY OF THEM WON'T COME TO A MEETING LIKE THIS AND SPEAK OUT ABOUT.

AND I THINK IT'S NOT JUST A HISTORIC ISSUE.

IT'S ALSO PRESERVING THAT COMMUNITY OVER THERE, WHICH IS GENERATIONAL IN THOSE HOUSES.

THOSE FOLKS PASS A LOT OF THEM, THEIR HOUSES DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY OR FUNDS TO ALWAYS COME TO MEETINGS AND TO KIND OF SAY, HEY, THIS IS PART OF OUR CULTURE AND WHAT KIND OF, WHAT WE GREW UP INTO.

AND WE'RE JUST GOING TO, YOU KNOW, I DON'T THINK WE SHOULD GIVE UP ON IT SO EASILY.

I DON'T EITHER, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT WITH STORIES.

YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE FROM HERE THAT WORKED IN THERE, YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN TALKING TO FOLKS THAT WORKED IN THERE, THEN THERE'S THE, THE YOUNG KID THAT WAS WORKING FOR EXTRA MONEY TO GO TO THE RITZ THEATER, OR THEN THERE'S THE PEOPLE DRIVING FROM ALL THE CITIES ALL AROUND, YOU KNOW, TO PICK UP ICE.

THERE'S AN AD THAT I JUST RESEARCHED, YOU KNOW, THAT'S WHERE PEOPLE PUT THEIR HOGS WHEN JULY, WHEN IT WAS SO HOT, THEY WOULD PUT, PUT THEIR HOGS IN THE LOCKERS THERE.

I MEAN, THERE'S JUST STORIES AFTER STORIES GOING ON FROM ALL GENERATIONS, FROM ALL DIFFERENT TYPES OF MCKINNEY, EITS, YOU KNOW, THAT HAVE SO MANY MEMORIES AND IT'S NOT JUST MCKINNEY, IT'S THE OTHERS.

CAUSE WE'RE THE COUNTY.

AND HONESTLY, IF YOU TAKE DOWN THIS STRUCTURE, WHICH, YOU KNOW, MAYBE WE HAVE TO DO THAT, BUT IF YOU TAKE DOWN THIS STRUCTURE, WHAT ELSE IS THERE IN EAST MCKINNEY AREA THAT IS OF THAT HISTORICAL NATURE? WHAT OTHER BUILDING IN TOP THAT IT, IS THERE ANY OTHER BUILDING THAT'S GOING TO BE ICONIC FOR THAT SIDE OF MCKINNEY? I MEAN, I CAN'T THINK OF ANY, I DRIVE PAST THAT AREA EVERY DAY.

THAT'S A VERY MUCH, THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL THAT'S LEFT OVER THERE.

SO WE DO STILL HAVE THE FLOUR MILL.

WE HAVE PARTS OF THE GRAINERY TOP WHERE TOPS IS GOING.

WE HAVE THE DOTY HIGH SCHOOL A LITTLE BIT FARTHER NORTH ON THROCKMORTON.

UH, AND WE HAVE A FEW OTHER CHURCHES AND SEVERAL OF THE KIND OF HISTORIC BUILDING, SMALL RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AS WELL TOO.

I'M TALKING LIKE, YOU KNOW, THAT'S A PRETTY BIG BUILDING AND IT LOOKS EVEN MORE MASSIVE NOW THAT ALL THE OTHER BUILDINGS AROUND IT HAVE BEEN TAKEN DOWN.

I MEAN, IT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT AS A COMMUNITY, WE HAVE TO REALLY THINK ABOUT AND WE HAVE TO RESPECT ALL PARTS OF MCKINNEY, YOU KNOW, IN ALL AREAS.

SO DEPICTS THE INDUSTRIAL TIME PERIOD FOR THOSE OF US, YOU KNOW, THAT TALK TO THE MCKINNEY NIGHTS AND EVERYTHING.

AND, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE OF THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE STRUCTURE AND EVERYTHING, YOU KNOW, EVEN WITH ALL THOSE FOUR DRAWINGS, DIFFERENT ONES, I MEAN, STILL MY FAVORITE WOULD BE JUST TO LEAVE IT AS IS, DO THE RESTORATION TO IT, TO KEEP IT AS IS NOT HAVE ANY WINDOWS IN IT AND PUT A TEXAS HISTORIC MARKER IN FRONT OF IT AND HAVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES ALL AROUND IT.

YOU KNOW, TELL THE STORY ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE IN THAT TIME PERIOD, SHOW THESE ADS, SHOW ALL THIS RESEARCH THAT WE'VE COME UP WITH, YOU KNOW, ABOUT THIS STRUCTURE.

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY, I LOVE A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT THE COUNCIL IS DOING AND THAT THE CITY OF MCKINNEY IS DOING.

IT'S JUST AMAZING.

UM, I GO DOWN TO THE PEARL ALL THE TIME IN SAN ANTONIO AND THEY'VE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB, BUT IT, YOU KNOW, IT IS, IT IS VERY MODERN AND I JUST EAT IF WE COULD JUST SLOW DOWN JUST A TINY BIT TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE ONCE THIS BUILDING IS GONE, WE ARE NEVER, EVER GOING TO GET IT BACK.

AND, YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST, IT'S GONE FOREVER.

AND I JUST THINK THAT, UM, I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU COMING TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT IT.

AND THE FOLKS OUT THERE THAT HAVE COME TO LISTEN BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, MCKINNEY IS VERY SPECIAL IN THAT WE HAVE SO MANY AMAZING OLD STRUCTURES AND WE'VE BEEN VERY COGNIZANT OF PRESERVING THEM.

AND I WOULD JUST HATE THIS TO GO AWAY WITHOUT REALLY THINKING ABOUT IT AND HAVING SOME GOOD, HEALTHY DISCUSSION ABOUT IT RESPECTFULLY, YOU KNOW? YEAH.

UM, LISTS OF WHAT WE DO WITH BEFORE AND THE ICE HOUSE DECISION WAS MADE CURRENTLY, WHEREVER YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT,

[00:50:03]

WHICH IS THE SPACE AT THE END, FROM STORES.

I KNOW ACROSS THE STREET, THE SILOS I WAS AT THIS GOES INTO THE CITY, ALL SITE.

THIS GOES INTO THE CITY, PROBABLY ABOUT UTILIZING THIS, THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD.

ALSO THE HISTORY OF IT BECAME THIS BIG A HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE PUNCTURES AND PEOPLE AND THINGS LIKE THAT AS THIS, AS I KNOW WE HAVE, BUT THIS WOULD BE A WAY THAT WE GET, I CAN ATTEMPT TO DO NOT ALWAYS THE STORY AND WE'LL CALL THEM CONSTITUTION.

AND ALL OF THESE BIG STORIES, THERE'S THIS STORY OF HISTORY.

AND THE HISTORY OF IT WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE STORY.

I WAS KIND OF A SECONDARY THING, THE APPROPRIATE AS YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND YOUR ABANDONED, OH, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.

ICE HOUSE IS STILL OUT THERE.

ICE HOUSE IS NOT UP HERE.

THIS IS SOMETHING, THERE WAS A HISTORY, SECONDARY REQUEST, THE BOARD TO JOIN US IN THIS EFFORT.

UM, THIS IS SOMETHING WE, WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO DEDICATE A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE CONSTRUCTION DOLLARS TO DO THIS RIGHT.

AND SO PLEASE WORK WITH ME ON THIS.

UH, IN ADDITION TO OUR EFFORTS ON WHAT WE DO WITH THE ICE HOUSE TO, TO HELP US ON THIS PROJECT.

UM, THAT BEING SAID, I WANTED TO SHOW YOU WHAT THE ARCHITECTS, UM, LATEST VERSION OF THE PLAZA WAS, UH, AS CURRENTLY DESIGNED THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A SPACE.

LIKE I SAID, THERE WAS A GATHERING PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE FOR THE NEIGHBORHOODS SURROUNDING THE PROPERTY TO MAKE IT A PARK SETTING, UH, AN EVENT SPACE WITH, UH, HOPEFULLY BETTER, SORRY, HUH? I'M GOING TO OFFEND SOMEONE BETTER STRUNG LIGHTS THAN WE HAVE OUR STREETS.

I DON'T THINK BOTTLES ARE REAL HISTORIC, LUCKY, PERSONAL OPINION, BUT IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S GREAT AND THAT LIGHTS IT.

SO IT'S A SPACE THAT CAN BE USED, UH, LATER IN THE EVENINGS WHEN THE WEATHER'S COMFORTABLE SOME GREEN SPACES AND PERFORMANCE SPACES, SO WE CAN HAVE LIVE MUSIC AND THINGS LIKE THAT HAPPENING ON THE PLAZA IN PARTICULAR, I WANTED TO POINT OUT THE DESIGN TEAM IS MIMICKING SOMEWHAT THE LOCATION OF THE ICE HOUSE WITH THE PATTERN OF THE, THE PAVING.

AND THEN ONE OF THE IDEAS THEY HAD WAS WE WANTED TO KEEP THAT VERTICALITY THAT WE WERE LOSING.

AND SO THEY WERE LOOKING AT BRINGING IN SOME MATURE LANDSCAPING INSTEAD OF, YOU KNOW, EVERY OTHER TREE IS GOING TO BE THIS THICK AND ABOUT THIS TALL, WHEN THE PLACE OPENS, THEY LIKE TO BRING SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT AND TO BRING IN THAT MASS INTO THAT SPACE.

SO CAN I ASK YOU A QUESTION ON THIS? UM, SO, UM, IT LOOKS A LOT LIKE THE PEARL, SO, UM, WE'D LIKE TO SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE DIFFERENTIATION.

LIKE I SAID, I'VE GO TO THE PEARL QUITE A BIT.

MY KIDS ARE DOWN THERE.

AND TO ME, I, WHEN HE BROUGHT THAT UP, I THOUGHT IT WAS THE PEARL DOWN IN SAN ANTONIO.

UM, THE OTHER THING IS, IS IN SAN ANTONIO, UM,

[00:55:01]

AT THE ALAMO, UM, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY DID OVER WITH THAT STRUCTURE WAS, UM, THEY ACTUALLY HAVE PARTS OF THE ALAMO, THE WALLS AND THAT THEY LEFT THERE.

AND I DIDN'T QUITE UNDERSTAND, UM, EARLIER IN YOUR PRESENTATION, WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT THAT EVEN FOUR FEET AND IT WOULDN'T HAVE TO BE FOUR FEET, BUT WHY COULDN'T AT LEAST THE PERIMETER OF THE ICE HOUSE BE LEFT.

I MEAN, STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY.

I MEAN, COME ON AND JUST REBUILD IT FOR, YOU KNOW, THREE FEET BUILD A RETAINING WALL, BUT AT LEAST YOU WOULD HAVE, THIS IS WHERE IT USED TO BE AND WHY NOT BUILD THAT AROUND THERE? SO AT LEAST IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE EVERY OTHER METROPOLIS CELL DOING THESE AREAS.

I THINK THAT'S, THAT'S A GREAT COMMENT.

AND IF THERE IS NOT A WAY TO PRESERVE THE BUILDING, YOU COULD KEEP THE BASE OF THE BUILDING OR THE INTAKE, THE BRICKS, AND, YOU KNOW, YEAH.

ULTIMATELY WHEN, YEAH, THERE'S SOME THINGS SHORT OF REDESIGNING EVERYTHING.

LIKE I SAID, IF THE COUNCIL DOESN'T CHOOSE TO GO BACK THAT ROUTE, THERE MAY BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO INCORPORATE IT.

THAT'S RIGHT.

WHERE MY MIND WAS GOING.

YEAH.

BECAUSE IT'S SO COOL.

WHEN YOU GO TO THE ALAMO AND SCENIC TONY, YOU SIT ON THE ORIGINAL WALLS OF THE ALAMO.

YES.

THE WHOLE STRUCTURE IS NOT THERE, BUT THIS IS EXACTLY WHERE IT WAS AND THAT YOU CAN FEEL THE PULSE OF THE HISTORY AND WHEN YOU'RE THERE, BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE EXACT WALLS AND THAT'S WHERE THEY WERE, AND THIS IS WHERE THEY FOUGHT, OR THIS IS WHERE THEY PULLED THE WATER OUT FROM THE ARTESIAN.

WELL, WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, IT'S GREAT COMMENT.

THANK YOU.

IS THERE ANY, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT STATES THE COST OF WHAT IT WOULD BE TO JUST KEEP IT AS IS NO WINDOWS ROOF? YOU KNOW, JUST, JUST, UM, MAKE IT A STRUCTURE FOR PEOPLE TO LOOK AT.

HAS, WAS THAT LOOKED AT, AT ALL JUST BY ITSELF? I THINK THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS FELT THAT LEAVING IT AS IT IS, IS NOT A SAFE OPTION.

SAFETY OF THE SITE, GIVEN THE DETERIORATION OF THE MATERIALS, THEY FELT THAT THAT WAS NOT AN OPTION.

DID ANY OF YOU GO LOOK AT THE SISTER ICE HOUSE THAT'S IN OAK CLIFF? I HAVEN'T SEEN THE ONE.

I KNOW THERE'S A WARM HOUSE WAS BUILT AT THE SAME TIME.

YEAH.

I'VE SEEN PHOTOS OF THE ONE IN WACO THAT IT ALMOST, IT'S A LITTLE LARGER THAN OURS, BUT IT'S, YOU CAN TELL IT'S THE SAME DESIGN AND IT, IT JUST, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU TALK TO CHILDREN AT THE HISTORY MUSEUM, YOU KNOW, WE'VE DONE A LOT OF DIFFERENT CHILDREN PROGRAMS THROUGH THE YEARS AND WHEN THEY SEE SOMETHING AND I'LL GIVE YOU A PERFECT SCENARIO, WE HAVE, WE HAVE MY DAD BROUGHT OVER THE OUTHOUSE FROM OUR FARM AND IT'S IN MY BACKYARD, BUT IT'S UNDERNEATH THE BARN AND I HAVE IT, YOU KNOW, WHEN, WHEN THEY COME UP AND THEY GO, WHAT IS THIS? THIS IS AN OUTHOUSE, YOU KNOW, AND I'LL OPEN THE DOOR, SHOW THEM WHERE THE LITTLE D YOU KNOW, AND IT'S LIKE, WHOA, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT.

YOU KNOW, AND THEN I'LL SHOW HIM ONE OF THOSE OTHER THINGS THAT, YOU KNOW, BUT IF THEY'RE LOOKING AT A BOOK, THEY GET MORE OUT OF A VISUAL.

EVERYBODY DOES THAN LOOKING IN A BOOK.

SOMETIMES THERE'S BOOKS GALORE, THERE'S INTERNET, THE LOWER OF COURSE.

BUT WHENEVER SOMEONE COULD SEE THE ICE HOUSE AND ACTUALLY RELATE, WE JUST WENT TO AN EXHIBIT AND, UM, MARSHALL AND THEY, THEY HAVE THIS BUILDING AND YOU GO AROUND, YOU LISTEN TO ON THE PHONE, YOU KNOW, ABOUT WHAT THIS IS AND WHAT THIS IS.

AND THAT WAS MUSE WORKS THAT DID THAT EXHIBIT M U S E WORK.

AND THEY DO A LOT OF CITY THINGS AND EVERYTHING.

AND THAT'S WHY WE WENT TO GO LOOK AT MARSHALL BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY'VE PUT INTO THEIR HISTORIC PRESERVATION THAT CITY OVER THERE.

AND WE WENT TO GO LOOK AT IT.

IT WAS AWESOME.

YEAH.

AND, UM, YOU KNOW, I GUESS, I GUESS THAT'S IT, THANK YOU FOR, FOR COMING TONIGHT SHOWING US BECAUSE WE HAD NO ANSWERS, YOU KNOW, WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ON HERE TO PRESERVE AND PROTECT AND PURSUE HISTORIC INTEGRITY OF MCKINNEY.

AND, AND ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, WE HAD NO ANSWERS.

I WAS GETTING SLAMMED DUNKED, YOU KNOW, WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS? WHY, WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? AND THIS WAY, YOU KNOW, FOR THE CITY FOR THAT, UM, IT BECAME A STRUCTURAL CONVERSATION WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE ALSO INCLUDED AN OUTWARD CONVERSATION WITH THIS BOARD TO TALK ABOUT HISTORIC PRESERVATION.

IT, IT, IT GOT MORE TO A NUTS AND BOLTS STRUCTURAL CONVERSATION VERSUS THE STORIES.

SO I'M GLAD I'M HERE TONIGHT TO HEAR THIS.

AND I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU MOVING FORWARD AS WELL, TO, AND GET IN OUR DESIGN TEAM TO INCORPORATE ALL OF THIS INTO WHAT THEY'RE WORKING ON.

SO I DO APOLOGIZE THAT THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN PREVIOUSLY.

YEAH.

BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE A FIRST GIVING HER PITCH, IT KINDA SOUNDED LIKE Y'ALL'S MINE WAS MADE A LITTLE BIT, THAT IT WAS JUST FOR SURE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SAVED, BUT AFTER SEEING THIS AND LISTENING TO WHAT Y'ALL TALKED ABOUT, WHERE AT LEAST IF YOU COULD JUST SAVE A PORTION OF IT, BECAUSE THIS ISN'T AWESOME DESIGN, BUT YOU KIND OF SEE GREEN SPACES LIKE THIS.

A LOT OF PLACES, VERY POPULAR AND A LOT OF UNIQUE BY NATURE.

SO A LOT OF PLACES DO IT AND THEY SAY, THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE LIVE MUSIC AND DO ALL THAT.

BUT

[01:00:01]

THERE'S PLACES KIND OF LIKE THAT ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT THERE'S NOT FAIRVIEW HAS IT TOO.

AND NOBODY GOES THERE.

YEAH.

SO I THINK AT LEAST IF YOU JUST HAD, IF YOU COULDN'T PRESERVE THE WHOLE STRUCTURE, JUST YEAH.

FOUR FEET, THAT'S, IT'S LIKE A RETAINING WALL AND HOW COOL WOULD IT BE TO HAVE LIVE MUSIC THERE AND HAVE PEOPLE BE ABLE TO SIT IN THERE AND WALK AROUND? I FEEL LIKE THAT'S A LOT MORE SHOWS THAT MCKINNEY CARES ABOUT HER HISTORY.

IT GIVES IT'S A CONVERSATION TOPIC.

WHEREAS THIS, IF PEOPLE, YOU SAY THE GREEN SPACE IS LIKE THE SHAPE OF THE ICE HOUSE, I MEAN, NOBODY'S GOING TO KNOW THAT MUCH, WHATEVER THEY GET, PEOPLE ARE GONNA GO, WHAT WAS AN ICE HOUSE? YOU KNOW? SO I THINK JUST BEING ABLE TO PRESERVE AT LEAST A SMALL PORTION OF IT.

SO IT'S JUST, IT'S STILL TANGIBLE IF YOU, I MEAN, YEAH.

AND JUST A QUICK QUESTION, CAUSE I DON'T KNOW, MAYBE SOMEBODY HERE KNOWS, IS THERE ANY LIKE, UH, PARTS OF THE, WELL THAT ARE STILL THERE, LIKE THAT COULD ALSO BE INCORPORATE, DID YOU GUYS LOOK INTO THAT AT ALL? LIKE, UM, I DON'T KNOW, ALL THE COMPONENTS THAT GO INTO AN ICE HOUSE, A LOT OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT ON THE PROPERTY.

I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF, UH, REMNANTS OF THE OLD OPERATIONS IN TERMS OF THINGS THAT HAVE TO BE REMOVED ENVIRONMENTALLY THE, WELL, I'M NOT SURE ABOUT ON THIS STRUCTURE TO THE LEFT.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS.

THIS RIGHT HERE.

THAT WOULD BE PART OF, THAT'S A CISTERN THAT THEY'RE ADDING TO CAPTURE RAINWATER TO REUSE, BUT THAT WOULD BE BUILT.

OKAY.

AND IS THAT, UM, IS THAT SIGNIFICANT TO ANYTHING IN MCKINNEY? NO, NOT IN PARTICULAR.

I THINK THERE WAS, UH, AN ENVIRONMENTAL GREEN STUFF.

YEAH.

YOU HAPPENED TO CONTACT SOUTH FLYNN INDUSTRIES.

CAUSE I, THEY WROTE A BOOK IN 1977 ABOUT THE ICE HOUSES.

I HAVE NOT.

WELL, ANYHOW, IT'D BE KINDA COOL IF SOME OF THE IMPLEMENTS MAYBE COULD BE INCORPORATED IN IT TOO.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY'VE TALKED ABOUT OR LIKE PLACEHOLDERS, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T HAVE THAT.

IT'D BE GREAT.

YEAH.

I WAS JUST AT A PLACE, THERE WAS AN OLD, UH, IT WAS AN OLD, WHAT WAS IT? SUGAR CANE MILL.

AND THEY KEPT THE WHEELS FROM THE MILL AND THEY INCORPORATED IT INTO THE THAT'S WHAT THIS IS INTENDED TO BE.

EVEN THOUGH THESE ARE GENERIC WHEELS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH OURS.

BUT IF THERE'S SOMETHING THAT WE CAN INCORPORATE INTO THE SITE TO DO SUGAR CANE HERE, YOU GET NOT A WHOLE LOT.

WE DID A LOT OF COTS.

WE DID A LOT COTTON.

WELL, ONE THING THAT ADDS AUTHENTICITY LIKE IN THE ALAMO, OR IF YOU GO TO BOSTON ON THE FREEDOM LOG IS SEEING AUTHENTIC ARTIFACTS OUTSIDE THAT PEOPLE AND CHILDREN CAN TOUCH AND, YOU KNOW, SIT ON OR, I MEAN, IT'S JUST SO MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL WHEN YOU HAVE THOSE ACTUAL ARTIFACTS.

SO INSTEAD OF NOT, NOT TO, UM, YOU KNOW, CRITICIZE THE GREEN SPACE THERE, BUT IT REPRESENTS MCKINNEY, YOU KNOW, AND IT'S A BASIC ARCHITECTURAL KIND OF DRAWING THERE, BUT THERE'S NOTHING WHAT, WHAT THEIR SHOWS THAT'S IN MCKINNEY, TEXAS, THAT'S JUST YOUR BASIC, YOU KNOW, SO ANYHOW, THAT WOULD BE KIND OF NICE IF THAT COULD BE REALLY APPRECIATE THE BOARD'S FEEDBACK TONIGHT.

THIS IS VERY HELPFUL.

WELL, WE'LL TAKE THIS BACK TO THE DESIGN TEAM, UM, AND TO THE CITY COUNCIL FOR CONVERSATIONS, UH, IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE COULD HAVE A, A MORE A MEETING, A CITY MEETING, A CITY HALL MEETING, YOU KNOW, A SPECIAL MEETING THAT EVERYBODY COULD COME TO AND MAYBE TELL STORIES OR SOMETHING? I DON'T KNOW.

LIKE I SAID, WE HAVE THAT SINCE NO ONE SAID, NO, YOU ARE NOW MY HISTORIC STORY, A PANEL, THAT'S GOING TO HELP US COLLECT THOSE STORIES.

WE HAVE DESIGN IDEAS TOO.

SO YEAH.

I MEAN, THE PEOPLE WOULD BE HAPPY TO GIVE FEEDBACK IF THEY HAVE A STRUCTURE TO GIVE FEEDBACK TO, BUT TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO BE TOO HAPPY WHEN THAT THING'S TORN DOWN.

WELL, I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING.

WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME Y'ALL BEING HERE.

UM, YOU KNOW, WE ARE THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY BOARD.

SO THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO US.

AND, AND, UM, YOU KNOW, I FEEL LIKE THAT WAS MY PURPOSE ON THIS BOARD IS TO MAKE IT AS DIFFICULT AS POSSIBLE BEFORE WE START TEARING DOWN HISTORIC STRUCTURES.

AND SO WE WANT TO LOOK AT EVERY POSSIBILITY TO SEE IF WE CAN AVOID THAT.

AND, UH, BUT WE APPRECIATE, WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE, ANSWERING OUR QUESTIONS AND, UM, A LOT OF GOOD QUESTIONS, A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK.

I HAVE ONE, I HAVE ONE MORE THING TO BRING FORTH.

THIS IS A STUDENT FROM BOYD HIGH SCHOOL THAT I THINK IF YOU DON'T MIND, I SHOULD READ TO YOU.

IS IT OKAY? SURE, BUDDY.

OKAY.

THIS IS ROSE RIP HUGGER.

SHE DOES A LOT OF RESEARCH TRENDS.

SHE'S FROM MCKINNEY BOYD, HIGH SCHOOL.

SHE'S A SOPHOMORE AND SHE JUST WROTE THIS, THE MCKINNEY ICE HOUSE COMMUNITY IN THE DAYS BEFORE THERE WERE REFRIGERATORS IN EVERYONE'S HOUSE, THE WHOLE CITY RELIED ON THE ICE HOUSE TO SUPPLY THEM COLD BLOCKS OF ICE.

THE EMERGENCE OF THESE FACILITIES WAS A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT TO FOOD PRESERVATION

[01:05:01]

IN BOTH GROCERY STORES AND INSIDE OF HOMES MORE OVER IT SHOWED THE ABILITY FOR THE CITY TO RELY ON ONE ANOTHER.

THE ICE HOUSE IN MCKINNEY IS A HISTORIC PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE THAT IS VITAL TO PRESERVE AND IS A PRIME EXAMPLE TO SHOW WHERE WE CAME FROM EARLY, BE MILSTEAD WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO TALK TO ME ABOUT HOW THE ICE HOUSE AFFECTED HIM THROUGHOUT HIS ONGOING 92 YEARS OF LIFE.

MR. MILSTEAD REMINISCED ON HIS YOUNGER YEARS DESCRIBING HOW HE VIEWED ICE AS A LUXURY BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED A NEW BLOCK AROUND EVERY THREE DAYS.

HIS FAMILY HAD AN INSULATED BOX WHERE THEY KEPT THE 10 POUND BLOCK ALLOWING IT TO LAST UP TO A FULL DAY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS AS MR. MILSTEAD GREW UP AND WAS TASKED WITH PICKING UP A VERY LARGE 40 POUND BLOCK OF ICE ON HIS WAY TO WORK IN THE MORNINGS, HE WOULD SHARE THIS WITH HIS FELLOW WORKERS THROUGHOUT THE DAY ONE YEAR, MR. MILSTEAD HAD AN EXCESS OF ONIONS FROM HARVEST THAT HE AND HIS FATHER, WHEN WE'RE CONTINUALLY UNABLE TO SELL AT MARKET TOGETHER, THEY BROUGHT DOWN THE ONIONS TO THE ICE HOUSE AND STORED THEM THERE FOR AROUND TWO WEEKS BEFORE FINALLY BEING ABLE TO GET RID OF THEM.

THE ICE HOUSE IS A BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE THAT DESERVES TO BE LOVED AND APPRECIATED AS PART OF OUR TEXTS AND CULTURE.

IT HAS SERVED THROUGH MANY SCORCHING, TEXAS SUMMERS, PROVIDING PEOPLE WITH THE ABILITY TO COOL DOWN, RELAX AND PRESERVE BOTH THEMSELVES AND THEIR FOOD.

IN ADDITION, I FOUND THROUGH MY CONVERSATION WITH MR. MILSTEAD, THAT MCKINNEY ACTUALLY USED TO HAVE TWO EITS AUSA'S UNTIL THE SMALLER ONE WAS TORN DOWN DURING CITY-WIDE STREET EXPANSION, MCKINNEY, LOCAL, JANICE STANFIELD, REFERENCE MAKING HOMEMADE ICE CREAM, TAKING ICE TO THE LAKE TO COOL DRINKS, PARTIES, AND OTHER FUN EXPERIENCES THAT STEM FROM THE MCKINNEY ICE HOUSE THROUGHOUT TEXAS ICE HOUSES THAT BECOME VERY INTERTWINED WITH OUR CULTURE WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT.

ICE HOUSES IN SOUTH TEXAS BEGAN TO STORE BEER AND OTHER DRINKS THAT QUICKLY DREW PEOPLE IN THE LOCAL CITIZENS USED ICE HOUSES AS NEIGHBORHOOD HANGOUTS.

AND TO AN EXTENT, A PUB RECENTLY THE STICKS ICE HOUSE ON ELDORADO MCKINNEY IS REFERENCING THE CULTURE SETTING AND NAME SIMILARLY, BUT YET DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT NORTH TEXAS ICE HOUSES BEGAN TO DEVELOP AS MODERN DAY GROCERY OR CONVENIENCE STORES.

THIS IS BECAUSE IN RURAL AREAS, IT WAS MUCH EASIER TO POP DOWN TO THE LOCAL ICE HOUSE THAN MAKING THE TRIP TO A MARKET THAT MAY BE FARTHER AWAY OR CLOSED THIS COME AND GO EXCHANGE BECAME A STAPLE OF THE SALAN ICE COMPANY AND BECAME THE REFERENCE POINT OF THE NOW NATIONWIDE GAS STATION AND CONVENIENCE STORE SEVEN 11.

THIS POPULAR CONVENIENCE STORE WAS STARTED RIGHT NEAR US IN DALLAS, TEXAS.

AND IT'S JUST A SMALL OUTCOME OF OUR INTERCONNECTEDNESS.

THE ICE HOUSE IS IN TEXAS, HAVE BEEN SERVING US WITH ICE AND POPULAR HANGOUT AREAS SINCE THEIR BEGINNING.

AND NOW I THINK THAT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO VALUE THEM.

IN ADDITION, THE MAJORITY, THE PEOPLE WHO THIS HISTORIC BUILDING HELPED HAVE PASSED, BUT THEIR EXPERIENCES, STORIES AND MEMORIES LIVE ON THE MCKINNEY ICE HOUSE STILL HAS THE CAPABILITY OF CONNECTING FUTURE GENERATION OF TEXAS.

AND THAT AGAIN IS BY ROSIE WHO WAS BORN HERE IN MCKINNEY.

SHE'S A MCKINNEY BOYD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, A SOPHOMORE.

THAT'S IMPRESSIVE.

THAT IS GREAT.

SO, UM, I WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH EVERYBODY.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT.

I HAVE LOTS OF RESEARCH HERE, BUT TO ME THAT'S THE NUMBER ONE.

WHAT WAS IMPRESSIVE? A SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

OKAY.

ANYBODY ELSE? THANK Y'ALL SO MUCH.

WE APPRECIATE YOU JAYDA.

OKAY.

WE'RE GOING TO MOVE TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.

[CONSENT ITEMS]

ITEM NUMBER TWO, TWO DASH 0 3 8, 8 MINUTES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY BOARD, REGULAR MEETING OF APRIL 7TH, 2022.

HOPEFULLY EVERYONE HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT IT.

AND DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THIS CONSENT AGENDA? UH, SO MOVED BY TIMBER, VICE CHAIRPERSON.

NICK WILLIAMS. DO I HAVE A SECOND OR SECOND? OKAY.

SECOND BY JAMES WEST.

OKAY.

ALL IN FAVOR.

SHOW YOUR RAISE, YOUR HAND CLOSED.

OKAY.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION.

ALL RIGHT.

THIS ITEM HAS BEEN APPROVED.

WE WILL MOVE TO OUR REGULAR AGENDA AND PUBLIC

[Conduct a Public Hearing to Consider/Discuss/Act on the Request by Ceilidh Charleson-Jennings for Approval of a Historic Marker for the House Located at 604 Heard Street]

HEARING ITEM NUMBER HP 2 0 2 2 DASH 0 0 2 9.

CONDUCT A PUBLIC HEARING TO CONSIDER DISCUSS, ACT ON THE REQUEST BY AND I'M I'M GOING TO NEED HELP WITH THAT FIRST NAME.

IS IT KAYLEE? OKAY.

CHARLESTON JENNINGS FOR APPROVAL OF A HISTORIC MARKER

[01:10:01]

FOR THE HOUSE LOCATED AT 6 0 4 HEARD STREET, PAULA NASTA.

HI.

HOW ARE YOU, TERRY? CAN YOU FRAME THAT UP FOR ME? THANK YOU SO MUCH.

LEAVING BOARD MEMBERS AND GUESTS THAT ARE HERE TONIGHT.

UM, TODAY WE ARE LOOKING AT A HISTORIC MARKER APPLICATION FOR THE 6 0 4 HURD STREET HOUSE.

UH, YOU CAN SEE A PICTURE OF IT HERE ON THE SCREEN.

I FIND MINE THE NAME OF THE HOUSE THERE AT THE FRONT HOCKING, TIM WILSON, TALKING TO HIM WILSON HOUSE.

UH, AND THAT'S NAMED AFTER THE DIFFERENT FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE HOUSE.

YOU CAN SEE, THIS IS A KIND OF A VICTORIAN ERA HOUSE, UM, KIND OF A FOLK VICTORIAN, BUT IT'S GOT A LOT OF THE NICE KIND OF POLYCHROMATIC COLORS THAT ARE VERY TYPICAL OF THAT ERA OF HOME.

UM, SO WE'LL, WE'LL LOOK A LITTLE BIT CLOSER AT IT AS WE GO ON.

IF THE CLICKER WORKS FOR ME QUICK, MAYBE YOU TURNED IT OFF.

HE DID.

OKAY.

THERE WE GO.

IT WAS JUST TURNED OFF.

OKAY.

SO THE TILT TALKING TO THE WILSON HOUSE IS LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF HURD STREET AND COLLEGE.

UH, YOU CAN SEE THE PICTURE THAT WE SAW JUST BEFORE WAS OF THE MAIN HOUSE RIGHT HERE.

THAT WAS THE FRONT YARD, THE FRONT HOUSE, FRONT IMAGE OF THAT HOUSE.

UM, IT IS A WOOD PIER AND BEAM HOUSE WITH A WOOD PLATTING AND SHINGLES AND CHEFS, SASH WINDOWS.

UM, IT'S LOCATED IN, WHAT'S CALLED THE MURRAY EDITION.

UM, AS I POINTED OUT, THAT'S THE MAIN HOUSE THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT HERE.

UM, THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER STRUCTURES ON THE PROPERTY.

UH, ONE IS A GARAGE, BUT THE OTHER ONE IS A SECONDARY STRUCTURE ON THE PROPERTY THAT WAS BUILT AS KIND OF A, UM, AN EXTRA INCOME MAKING HOUSE BACK IN THE DAYS.

UM, THE FAMILY THAT LIVED HERE, THE TALKING TINS, UM, WERE ALSO IN CONSTRUCTION.

UH, AND SO, UM, THERE WERE, UM, IT WAS A LARGE FAMILY AND SO THE, THE SON AND THE FATHER, UH, BUILT SEVERAL DIFFERENT HOUSES AND STRUCTURES ON THE PROPERTY OVER THE YEARS.

UM, BUT THESE ARE THE TWO THAT REMAINED THE GARAGE WAS ACTUALLY ADDED IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

SO IT'S NOT HISTORIC, BUT IT BATCHES, UH, THIS IS AN IMAGE OF, UH, FROM 1905 OF THE HOUSE.

UH, YOU CAN SEE, UH, MARGARET RECTOR AND LEE TALKINGTON, THE ELDER ARE HERE AND THEY'RE HOLDING SOME OF THEIR GRANDKIDS IN THE PICTURE AND YOU CAN SEE THE HOUSE LOOKS A LOT LIKE IT DID THEN EVEN TODAY.

UH, THANKS TO SOME VERY CAREFUL RESTORATION.

UH, ON THE SIDE, YOU CAN SEE PICTURES OF, UH, LEE TALKING TO HIM AND MR. WILSON, UH, MR. WILSON WAS THE SON-IN-LAW OF, OF THE FAMILY.

UH, WELL-KNOWN IN MCKINNEY.

UH, FOR MANY OF THE THINGS HE WAS INVOLVED WITH, UH, THE HOUSE HAS AS MANY HOUSES OVER THE YEARS LEARNED AND UNLEARNED, UM, SOME OF ITS HISTORY, UH, AND SOME OF ITS BUILDING.

AND SO YOU CAN SEE IN 1985, WHEN WE DID THAT FIRST HISTORIC SURVEY, UH, WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE ON THE UPPER LEFT CORNER.

UM, AND THEN IN 2005, WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE, AND THAT CIRCLE ISN'T ACTUALLY SHOWING ANYTHING, SORRY ABOUT THAT.

UM, BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT IT'S STILL, UH, EVEN BACK THEN, YOU COULD STILL SEE THE DETAILS ON THE HOUSE.

UM, ONE THING YOU CAN NOTICE IS THAT, UM, OVER THE YEARS, IF WE WERE TO GO BACK, UM, THAT GINGERBREAD AROUND THE TOP AND THE SCHOOLWORK ON THE COLUMNS, UH, WAS ACTUALLY REMOVED, UH, IN THE MID 20TH CENTURY.

UM, BUT IT HAS SINCE BEEN RETURNED.

UM, AND SO WE CAN SEE IT AGAIN NOW ON THE NEWER PICTURES, UH, THIS JUST KIND OF TAKES US THROUGH A LEVEL, LOOK AT, UH, THE PROPERTY AS IT EVOLVES OVER TIME.

AND YOU CAN SEE, UH, IN THE EARLY DAYS, UH, THERE WERE THOSE EXTRA LITTLE BUILDINGS ON THE SIDE WHERE THERE WERE SOME STABLES AND SOME COTTAGES.

UM, AND THEN AS TIME WENT ON, DIFFERENT BUILDINGS MOVED AND, AND LEFT, UH, AND YOU CAN SEE HERE IN THE 1960S, WE HAVE THAT ADDITIONAL HOUSE, RIGHT, RIGHT THERE, THAT LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BACK, UH, AND THE PROPERTY GOT A LITTLE SMALLER OVER TIME AS IT WAS PARCELED AS WELL.

LIKE, UH, THESE ARE SOME OTHER IMAGES OF THE HOUSE.

UH, YOU CAN SEE THE WEST FACADE HERE AND THE EAST FACADE, YOU CAN SEE THE DETAILING AND THE GABLE CONTINUES ONTO THE EAST SIDE AS WELL, NOT JUST ON THE WEST SIDE.

AND THESE ARE SOME MORE OF THOSE CHARACTER DEFINING DETAILS ON THE HOUSE, AND IT HAS ITS EASTLAKE DOOR STILL IT'S POLYCHROME KELLY PAINTING, THE GINGERBREAD TRIMS, THE GABLE ORNAMENTS, SPINDLE POSTS, AND A PROMINENT FRONT PORCH.

SO PAULA, THE, UM, THE GINGERBREAD TRIM WAS REPLACED THEN, UM, PARTS OF IT WERE SO, UM, CAUSE IT WAS TAKING OFF AT ONE POINT.

YES.

AND SO, UH, IT'S MOSTLY BEEN RETURNED.

UM, AND THEN WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK.

[01:15:01]

PARDON? SO THAT'S A LOT OF WORK.

YES, YES IT IS.

AND ALL THAT PAINTING, YOU KNOW, ONCE YOU DO ALL THOSE DIFFERENT COLORS AND GET THE LINES TO LOOK NICE AND CRISP.

YES.

LOTS OF TAPE I'M SURE.

UM, AND THEN YOU HAVE IN YOUR PACKET, UH, THE NARRATIVE THAT WENT ALONG WITH THE HOUSE, UH, THAT, UH, KAYLEE WROTE UP ON THE HOUSE, UH, THAT TALKS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE FAMILY THAT LIVED THERE.

UM, THE TALKINGTON DAUGHTERS HAD SEVERAL DAUGHTERS AND, UH, THEY MARRIED WELL.

UM, THE DAUGHTERS ALSO, UM, NOT ONLY DID THEY OUTLIVE THEIR HUSBANDS, UM, THEY RAN THE HOUSE FOR MANY YEARS AFTER THEY HAD PASSED.

UH, AND THE WOMEN WERE A COUPLE OF WOMEN WERE GHOST WRITERS FOR THE NEWSPAPER HERE IN TOWN.

AND SO WE HAD A NUMBER OF GHOST WRITERS HERE IN TOWN AND THESE WERE TWO OF THEM.

UM, AND SO YOU CAN GO THROUGH AND SEE SOME MORE OF THAT.

IF YOU'D LIKE TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN, THAT'S THE WILSON'S, THAT'S THEIR HOUSE AND THE DOOR.

AND THESE ARE JUST THE OTHER IMAGES OF THE HOUSE.

THAT'S THE KIND OF NORTH SIDE OF THE HOUSE.

UH, AND THAT'S WHERE IT'S, DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? THE HOUSE WE DO, THE OWNER IS HERE HAS THE FOOTPRINT OF THE HOUSE CHANGED.

IT LOOKS VERY SIMILAR THROUGHOUT ALL THESE.

SO THE FOOTPRINT HASN'T CHANGED TOO MUCH.

UM, THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF AN ADDITION BACK HERE.

THIS IS A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN IT WASN'T IN 1902, UH, BUT NOT TOO MUCH DIFFERENT.

AND THEN, UM, THIS, THERE WE GO.

AND THEN THERE'S THIS LITTLE PORCH THAT WAS ADDED TO THE BACK PORCH.

THAT'S, THAT'S A 21ST CENTURY ADDITIONAL.

SO, BUT IT'S, IT'S TUCKED AWAY IN THE BACK, THE PAINTING SPECTACULAR.

AND IT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.

IT MUST BE VERY PATIENT IT, BUT THE DETAIL WORK.

YES.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

VERY NICE.

NICE.

I'LL BET GARDENING EITHER.

YEAH.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT I KNOW IN THOSE PICTURES IN 2005, IT WAS, IT WAS WHITE.

DO YOU EVER KNOW WHAT THE ORIGINAL, SO YEAH, YOU CAN COME, RIGHT.

COME UP AND TALK.

CAUSE YOU CAN TELL THEM ABOUT THIS VIEW, THE NEIGHBORS THAT, UM, IF YOU DON'T MIND, WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR, GIVE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS? I, YOU DO THAT FIRST.

THANK YOU.

SURE.

WELL, I'M KAYLEE CHARLTON JENNINGS AND I LIVE AT 6 0 4, HEARD I'M A COLLEGE PROFESSOR, SO THIS IS REALLY DIFFICULT.

SO INSTEAD OF THIS, UM, BUT YES, UH, THEY, THE FIRST YEAR I HAD THE HOUSE IN 2010, I WAS ACTUALLY WORKING IN THIS GARDEN.

UM, AND A WOMAN PULLED UP TO THE CURB WITH THIS TINY, TINY, TINY LITTLE LADY IN THE FRONT SEAT AND THE TINY LITTLE LADY, THEY ROLLED DOWN THE WINDOW AND SHE SAID, OH, I LIVED HERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE AS A LITTLE GIRL DURING THE SPANISH INFLUENZA, SHE WAS FROM KENTUCKY.

HER ENTIRE FAMILY HAD DIED EXCEPT HER MOTHER WHO WAS STILL ALIVE AND VERY SICK.

AND HER GRANDMOTHER AND KENTUCKY DID A KIND OF A HAIL MARY AND SENT HER DAUGHTER TO FRIENDS IN MCKINNEY.

THEY WERE TALKING TINS WERE FROM KENTUCKY.

AND SHE SAID, I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE BLUE AND YELLOW HOUSE WITH RED ROSES IN THE DOOR.

AND THAT'S WHEN I BOUGHT THE HOUSE.

IT WAS WHITE.

AND I'D BEEN WONDERING WHAT THE ORIGINAL COLORS WERE.

I HAD A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH THAT COULD SHOW ME SOME SATURATION.

SO I KNEW THERE WERE MULTIPLE COLORS, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE.

AND SHE SAID BLUE AND YELLOW HOUSE WITH RED ROSES IN THE DOOR.

SO WHEN WE CHOSE THE PALETTE, I WORKED WITH A MAN NAMED ROBERT SCHWEITZER.

WHO'S A PROFESSOR OF MERITUS OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

AND I WANTED, YOU KNOW, WHAT WERE THE BLUES THEN? WHAT WERE THE YELLOWS THEN? WHAT WAS THE RED THEN? AND, UM, HE HELPED ME CARVE OUT THE PALETTE AND LOOKED AT THAT PHOTOGRAPH.

AND, AND WE, WE FLOPPED IT A LITTLE BIT IN TERMS OF PLACEMENT, BUT YEAH, I TH I THINK WE'VE GOT THE BLUE AND YELLOW HOUSE WITH RED ROSES, AT LEAST.

YEAH.

SO THERE YOU GO, WALTER WILSON, BY THE WAY, I SHOULD SAY EITHER THE TWO DAUGHTERS, THE TWO DAUGHTERS IN LAW THAT WERE THE GHOST WRITERS IT'S IN YOUR POCKET, BUT WALTER WILSON WAS THE PART OWNER AND EDITOR OF THE MCKINNEY CAREER CAUSE THAT FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS, AND, UM, WHEN HE DIED, HIS WIFE, JOSIE ACTUALLY GOES EDITED AND RAN THE PAPER FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS UNTIL SOMEBODY COULD COME IN.

SO THOSE TWO DAUGHTERS WERE PRETTY AMAZING AND HOW THEY PICKED UP THE PIECES AFTER, AFTER BEING WIDOWED AND THE FAMILY KEPT DOING IT AND DOING IT AND DOING IT.

I MEAN, THE MEN WERE, WERE AMAZING, BUT THE

[01:20:01]

WOMEN IN THEIR WAY WERE PRETTY AMAZING TOO.

SO I LOVE THEM FOR THAT.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

IS SHE, SHE MENTIONED THE MEN AND I, AND I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT.

SO, UM, THE TALKING TINS WERE ALSO, UH, I MENTIONED THEY WERE CONTRACTORS.

THEY WERE ALSO INVOLVED WITH THE MISSISSIPPI STORE, UM, THE ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION OF IT.

THEY WERE EXONERATED.

UM, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE MISSISSIPPI STORY STORY, UH, THAT BUILDING COLLAPSED DUE TO SOME UNFORTUNATE OVERLOADING, UM, AND CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS. AND NOW WE HAVE A BANK THERE, BUT, UM, BUT YEAH, HE WAS FOUND TO BE NOT AT FAULT FOR IT, BUT, BUT YET, SO THEY WERE PRETTY, THEY WERE PRETTY BUSY HERE IN TOWN.

IT'S INTERESTING.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

OKAY.

AT THIS TIME WE WILL OPEN THE PUBLIC HEARING FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK ON THIS ITEM.

WOULD ANYBODY LIKE TO SPEAK OKAY.

HEARING NONE.

DO I HAVE A MOTION TO CLOSE THE PUBLIC HEARING AND EITHER APPROVE OR DENY THE REQUEST, MAKE A MOTION TO CLOSE THE PUBLIC HEARING.

OKAY.

UM, THAT'S THE MOTION BY MS. FRIEDEL? DO I HAVE A SECOND SECOND BY MR. MCWILLIAMS? ALL IN FAVOR.

RAISE YOUR HAND OPPOSE.

OKAY.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION IN THAT, THAT ITEM HAS PASSED.

THIS PROCLAMATION WAS READ LAST TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE CITY COUNCIL.

AND I SAT IN THAT.

NONE OF YOU WERE THERE TO HEAR THAT BEING READ BECAUSE OF ANY GROUP THAT MAINTAINS THE HISTORY, THE ARCHITECTURE AND THE HERITAGE OF MCKINNEY.

NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THAN THIS GROUP RIGHT HERE.

UH, AND THIS WAS A PROCLAMATION TO CELEBRATE YOU GUYS WHO WERE APPOINTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL, WHO DO THE THING THAT CREATES THE COOLNESS AND MCKINNEY.

BECAUSE WHENEVER I HEARD HEAR THE WORDS, SMALL TOWN ATMOSPHERE, THE CHARM OF DOWNTOWN MCKINNEY AND THE UNIQUENESS OF MCKINNEY.

I KNOW THAT THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT BRINGS CORPORATE CITIZENS TO MCKINNEY BECAUSE IT DOESN'T EXIST IN EVERY SMALL TOWN IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT IT EXISTS IN A GREAT WAY HERE IN MCKINNEY.

AND IT'S BECAUSE YOU GUYS VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AND YOU COME OUT HERE AND YOU PUT YOUR HEARTS AND SOULS INTO PRESERVING SOMETHING UNIQUE TO MCKINNEY, TEXAS.

AND I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HEARD THAT AND EVERY MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL WANTED TO GIVE OUR, THANKS TO EACH AND ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO MCKINNEY AND KEEPING IT THE COOLEST PLACE ON THE PLANET.

THANK YOU.

I DO WANT TO PRESENT THIS TO YOUR CHAIRPERSON.

I'LL GET YOU THE SIGNED COPY AS WELL.

AND I APPRECIATE THAT.

AND COUNCIL MEMBER PHILLIPS, IF YOU COULD STICK AROUND TO THE END OF THE MEETING, WE'D LIKE TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THE BOARD AND YOU WITH THAT BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE DOING WITH NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH IS SOME INSTAGRAM POSTS.

AND SO WE WOULD LIKE TO GET THAT PICTURE ON THE INSTAGRAM WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CELEBRATING PEOPLE NEXT WEEK.

SO WE'LL ALSO DO WONDERS TO ENHANCE MY PERSONAL IMAGE.

[01:25:02]

THANK YOU, CHARLIE.

OKAY.

DO, UH, DO BOARD MEMBERS OR STAFF

[BOARD OR COMMISSIONER COMMENTS]

HAVE ANY OTHER FURTHER DISCUSSION OR ANYTHING TO TALK ABOUT? I WANTED TO JUST ADD A FEW THINGS, UM, TO THE PROC THE DISCUSSION OF THE PROCLAMATION.

UM, SO IT IS NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH AS WE TALKED ABOUT.

UM, AND, UH, PART OF THAT, AS I MENTIONED IS GOING TO BE A, WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO DO SOME INSTAGRAM POSTS.

UH, WE'RE DOING ONE A WEEK, UM, ON, ON THE CITY'S INSTAGRAM, UH, THAT WE'LL HAVE DIFFERENT TOPICS RELATING TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION AND MCKINNEY.

UH, BUT WE ALSO HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH, UH, THE NATIONAL, UM, WITH VISIT MCKINNEY FOR NATIONAL TOURISM AND TRAVEL WEEK, WHICH IS SO THIS WEEK, UM, AND HAVE BEEN DOING A BUNCH OF, UH, WELL HAVE BEEN OFFERING A BUNCH OF TOURS.

THE WEATHER HASN'T REALLY COOPERATED WITH US TOO MUCH.

UM, BUT SO WE'VE TRIED SOME OF THOSE I HEAR, UH, MR. GERSH HAD A FEW PEOPLE, UH, OR AT LEAST WAS THERE TO TRY TO DO A TOUR THE OTHER DAY TOO.

SO, UH, WE'VE TRIED A FEW AND WE HAVE ONE MORE COMING UP TOMORROW AND THEN SOME MORE COMING UP LATER THIS MONTH, IF ANYBODY GETS THREE, I BELIEVE IT'S THREE TOMORROW.

YEP, EXACTLY.

UM, AND SO THERE'LL BE THAT.

AND THEN IF YOU HAVE ANY STORIES YOU WANT TO RECOMMEND FOR INSTAGRAM, INSTAGRAM FEED, JUST THROW THEM MY WAY.

LET'S SEE.

LIKE I JUST WANTED TO SAY IT WAS GREAT HAVING BARRY SHELTON AND CHRIS JACKSON HERE TONIGHT.

I THINK IT WAS GREAT THAT THEY CAME OUT AND SPENT THAT TIME WITH US AND EXPLAINED THINGS SO WELL.

AND, UM, THAT WAS, THAT WAS WONDERFUL TO HAVE THEM HERE AND, AND TO BE ABLE TO TALK WITH THEM A LITTLE BIT.

AND I'M GLAD WE ALL ASKED.

I THINK THAT WAS GOOD.

ALSO.

I ALSO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE TOM PANTS.

HE'S OUR ALTERNATE MEMBER AND HE, HE IS HERE AND DR.

FELTUS SHE'S ON THE CITY COUNCIL, CHARLIE PHILLIPS ON THE CITY COUNCIL AND THEN JUSTIN BELLER AND PATRICK CLAUDIA, ALL ON THE CITY COUNCIL AND THEY HAD TO LEAVE.

AND, AND THEN GUY, GOSH, IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU.

IT'S HERE.

UH, GOOD.

ANYWAY, APPRECIATE Y'ALL BEING HERE.

AND, UM, YEAH.

SO HAVE THE DIRECTOR OF THE HISTORY MUSEUM SITTING OVER THERE, TURNING HER.

OKAY.

I ACTUALLY, OH, DO YOU, ONE MORE THING I WANTED TO, BECAUSE OF WHAT WE'RE CELEBRATING HISTORY THIS MONTH, THE MUSEUM, WE'RE DOING A SMOOTH BREW BARBERSHOP QUARTET LIVE AT MITCHELL PARK SATURDAY AT 6:00 PM.

SO FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT WANT TO SEE A BARBERSHOP QUARTET, JUST COME FOR A FREE LITTLE CONCERT.

AND THEN I WANTED TO END WITH SOMETHING, ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IN THE CITY OF MCKINNEY WEBSITE THAT EVERYBODY SEES ANY TIME.

AND THAT'S THE WAY I'M GOING TO END TODAY.

IT'S FOR ME, HISTORIC PRESERVATION, PRESERVING HISTORIC MCKINNEY, MCKINNEY LEADERSHIP AND RESIDENTS HAVE MADE THE PRESERVATION OF OUR HISTORY A PRIORITY OVER THE YEARS.

AND AS A RESULT, OUR HISTORY HAS BECOME A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OUR IDENTITY.

THE ECLECTIC MIX OF ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE TELLS A REMARKABLE STORY OF THE PEOPLE WHO BUILT AND HAVE LIVED IN MCKINNEY OVER THE DECADES.

THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE WAS CREATED TO SUPPORT THIS PRIORITY.

IT IS NOT ONLY RESIDENTS AND VISITORS OF MCKINNEY WHO APPRECIATE OUR HISTORY THOUGH.

WE HAVE RECEIVED NATIONAL ATTENTION FOR OUR HISTORIC CHARM AND BEAUTY.

AND I JUST WANTED TO SAY WITH THAT, I'M REALLY PROUD TO BE ON THIS BOARD AND REPRESENTS THE CITY THAT WAY.

THANK YOU.

YOU KNOW, DO WE HAVE A MOTION TO ADJOURN THE MEETING? I SO MOVE.

UM, MS. FRIEDEL, DO I HAVE A SECOND? MS. HAYNES? ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? OKAY.

ALL APPROVED.

RIGHT? RAISE YOUR HAND.

OKAY.

MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 6 57.

THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING.
