[Update on McKinney Public Library System]
ITEM. 23 0150 UPDATE ON MCKINNEY PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM. SPENCER SMITH. MARION COUNCIL. SPENCER SMITH, DIRECTOR OF LIBRARIES FOR A CITY OF MCKINNEY. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LET ME SHOW YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING AND WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE REST OF THE YEAR. I JUST WANT TO RUN THROUGH SOME FISCAL YEAR. 22 HIGHLIGHTS SO WE ADDED OVER 11.5 1000 NEW MEMBERS WITH AND WE AVERAGED OVER 668 UNIQUE PEOPLE BORROWING AN ITEM EVERY DAY THAT WE WERE OPEN THAT TOTALS UP TO OVER 1.6 MILLION ITEMS BORROWED AND IF YOU WERE TO TRY TO REPLICATE THAT, THROUGH USED PURCHASES OR OTHER THINGS, THAT'S ABOUT $6.6 MILLION IN VALUE. WITH THE LIBRARY GENERATED IN THOSE IN THOSE CIRCULATIONS. UM, WE HAD OVER 4000 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE. WHICH IF YOU RATE THAT OUR ENTRY LEVEL POSITION THAT'S ABOUT $65,000 IN STAFF TIME SAVINGS THAT THESE VOLUNTEERS ARE DOING THAT ALLOW OUR STAFF TO PERFORM THE A LOT OF THAT IS TEAM VOLUNTEERS. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW THIS, BUT TEENS ARE BEING ASKED TO VOLUNTEER ALL THE WAY DOWN IN SIXTH GRADE 12 13 YEARS OLD, AND WE'RE ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES IN TOWN THAT ALLOWS 13 YEAR OLDS TO GET VOLUNTEER HOURS, SO IT'S REALLY A NICE WIN WIN FOR US. AND WE HAD OVER 126 DIFFERENT PARTNERSHIPS THROUGH OUR 1359 PROGRAMS AND LAST FISCAL YEAR WHICH WE HAD OVER 32,000 TOTAL PROGRAM ATTENDANCE AS WE GO THROUGH AND THOSE ARE SOME PHOTOS THAT ARE ACTUALLY FROM PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED PROGRAMS AS WELL AS STAFF. TO GIVE YOU A RUN DOWN A KIND OF THE BREADTH OF OUR PROGRAMS. ONE OF THE COUNCIL GOALS IS TO OFFER THOSE CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS TO THE COMMUNITY. SO WE TRY TO HIT EVERYTHING WE CAN SO JUBILEE THIS YEAR WAS OUR BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROGRAM. FIESTA HAS BEEN A HERITAGE MONTH MULTILINGUAL STORYTIME, WHERE WE PARTNERED WITH PEOPLE TO COME IN, AND EVERY EVERY TIME IS A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE, SO THE KIDS GET EXPOSED TO THAT CULTURE CAROLING ON THE SQUARES OF LIBRARY PROGRAM, SO IF YOU'RE EVER WALKING AROUND DOWNTOWN AROUND CHRISTMAS, PEOPLE SINGING CAROLS THAT'S UH OUR STAFF, LEADING THAT WITH MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.UM EARTH DAY, WALLY. WE HAD OVER 950. PEOPLE COME TO ADD WALLY PROGRAM AT JOHN AND JUDY GAY THIS YEAR. UM SO WE'RE REALLY HITTING THE HIGH NOTES ON THOSE AND TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S INCORPORATED IN EVERYTHING WE DO. WE ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE IF WE MISS SOMETHING. IF THERE'S A HOLIDAY OR CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, YOU DON'T SEE US CELEBRATING FROM THE COMMUNITY.
LET US KNOW AND WE'LL GET IT INCORPORATED. SO THAT'S A TARGET FOR OUR STAFF AS WE GO THROUGH, BUT BEYOND CULTURAL PROGRAMS TO DO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AS WELL , UM, SO LET GO AND FRIENDS DEALS WITH STEM AND ENGINEERING THROUGH LEGOS. WE HAD MURDER MYSTERY NIGHTS. LET'S PLAY MUSIC TEACHING IN INTRODUCING YOUNG CHILDREN TO MUSIC THEORY AT A VERY EARLY AGE, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO LET'S GET LOUD AT THE BOTTOM. WHICH GARY LAND BACK OUR PROGRAMS MANAGER ACTUALLY STAYS ON FRIDAY NIGHTS ONCE A MONTH AND INVITES ANY MUSICIANS OF ANY AGENT SKILL LEVEL TO COME IN AND MANAGED TO GET LIBRARY. THEY HAVE A THEY HAVE A JAM SESSION. THEY CAN. TAKE THE WHOLE LIBRARY UP. WE HAD 15 PEOPLE SHOW UP AT THE LAST ONE. SO IT'S A REALLY GREAT WAY FOR THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO KIND OF GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER. KEEP JOKING THAT HE NEEDS TO CUT AN ALBUM AND WIN A GRAMMY BEFORE WE CAN CALL IT A SUCCESS. SO MAYBE ONE DAY WE'LL GET THERE. THE CHESS PROGRAM ON SATURDAY MORNINGS. WE TYPICALLY HAVE 40 TO 50 KIDS EVERY SATURDAY, PLAYING CHESS AT THE JOHN AND JUDY GAY LIBRARY. AND SOME OF THESE, LIKE INTRODUCTION TO PYTHON WERE ACTUALLY PARTNERING WITH A LOCAL TEENAGER WHO KNOWS PYTHON AND HE'S LEADING THOSE PROGRAMS FOR US AS A WAY FOR HIM TO KIND OF WANTS TO GIVE BACK AND BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY, AND THIS IS IN ADDITION TO OUR REGULAR STORY TIMES. A REGULAR BOOK CLUBS, ALL THE TRADITIONAL THINGS YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT LIBRARIES. UM WE ALSO HAVE A VERY ROBUST PROGRAM SUGGESTION FEATURE FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC IF THEY WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN SOMETHING OR SUBMIT SOMETHING WE'RE REALLY GOOD ABOUT TRYING TO WORK WITH THEM TO MAKE THAT WORK. IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, WE OFFERED NEW SERVICES SO WE NOW HAVE STREAMING VIDEO FOR BOTH ADULTS AND KIDS. SO THE KIDS STUFF HAS ALL THE PBS KIDS ACCESS. YOU CAN GET THIS ANY TIME OF DAY FROM HOME FROM ANYWHERE. THE ADULT STUFF HAS HBO DOCUMENTARIES. TV SHOWS A LOT OF BBC STUFF. DEMI IS LINKEDIN LEARNING ARE BOTH ONLINE LEARNING COURSES. SO THERE ARE ABOUT 30,000 ONLINE COURSES THAT NOW ANYBODY WITH A LIBRARY CARD CAN SIGN UP AND TAKE RANGING FROM YOU KNOW HOW
[00:05:05]
TO PLAN A PARTY TO HOW TO GET CERTIFIED IN A SPECIFIC PROGRAMMING, LANGUAGE OR SECURITY PROTOCOL. AND THOSE ARE WE'VE ADDED THEM THIS YEAR AND ALREADY GETTING THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF VIEWS JUST FROM MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. AND WE ADDED SOME NEW COLLECTIONS, SO WE DON'T HAVE A MAKER SPACE AT EITHER LIBRARY, AND THAT'S OKAY. IT'S BY DESIGN. INSTEAD, WE'VE JUST STARTED CHECKING OUT THREE D PRINTERS. SO IF SOMEONE WANTS TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS, THEY CAN CHECK ONE OUT. WE GIVE THEM THE INSTRUCTIONS TO USE IT. THEY GET IT FOR THREE WEEKS. THEY CAN MESS AROUND WITH IT. LEARN HOW IT WORKS AND THEN RETURN IT THE NEXT INCOMING ONLINE OR LASER ENGRAVERS. AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE MANY CNC ROUTER MACHINES COMING TO THAT. WE'RE PULLING TOGETHER SO THAT PEOPLE CAN NOT JUST COME IN AND DROP OFF A FILE BUT ACTUALLY LEARN HOW TO USE THE SOFTWARE AND THE HARDWARE TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES ON WHAT IT IS. AND THEN I DON'T KNOW IF YOU SAW, BUT WE ALSO HAD A TWO LIBRARIES OR TWO LIBRARIES TO ROBOTS AT THE JOHN AND JUDY GAY LIBRARY. UM WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THEM NAMED THAT'LL GO AROUND SOCIAL MEDIA SOON. THEY ARE RETURNING THE BOOKS THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT, WHICH IS SAVING STAFF TIME STAFF JUST UNLOCKED THE VOICE RECOGNITION FEATURE AND HOPEFULLY BY SUMMER. THEY'RE TELLING ME IF I TELL YOU THEY HAVE TO DO IT. UM THERE WILL BE AT THE POINT WHERE THEY CAN GO UP TO THE ROBOT AND ASK IT FOR A BOOK OR A TYPE OF BOOK, AND IT WILL GUIDE THEM TO THE SECTION WHERE THAT BOOK SHOULD BE. AND SO THAT'S THE PLAN THERE. THAT'S BEEN GREAT. THEY'RE LIKE THE PIED PIPER. IF THERE'S A KID IN THE BUILDING, AND THAT THING IS DRIVING AROUND THE KID IS FOLLOWING THAT ROBOT THE WHOLE TIME. UM AND SO WE'RE STILL WORKING ON GETTING THOSE FULLY INTEGRATED, BUT IT'S ALREADY JUST GENERATED SO MUCH POSITIVE POSITIVITY FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE IS THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE SEEN A ROBOT HAVE BEEN AROUND A ROBOT FREAK SOME PEOPLE OUT WE'VE HAD TO SLOW THEM DOWN BECAUSE THEY WERE MOVING A LITTLE TOO FAST. BUT IT'S BEEN REALLY GOOD STUFF FOR US. AND THEN SO FAR IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, WE'RE ACTUALLY IN A RECORD PACE. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN SEE THOSE NUMBERS, BUT BASICALLY THE YELLOW IS FISCAL YEAR. 23 THAT'S YEAR OVER YEAR FOR EACH MONTH.SO OUR PROGRAM, ATTENDANCE TOTALS ARE THROUGH THE ROOF COMPARED TO WHAT THEY WERE LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE CIRCULATION IS INCREASED FOR PHYSICAL ITEMS THAT DOESN'T HAVE DIGITAL ITEMS WHICH CONTINUE TO GROW MORE RAPIDLY THAN PHYSICAL ITEMS. VOLUNTEER HOURS BY MONTH . IN FEBRUARY, WE HAD 463 VOLUNTEER HOURS. JUST IN FEBRUARY. AND THEN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE BORROWING. I LOOKED TODAY BEFORE COMING HERE RIGHT NOW THERE ARE OVER 13,000 HOUSEHOLDS. THAT HAVE SOMETHING BORROWED FROM US. UM THAT'S EVERY THAT'S JUST TODAY'S SNAPSHOT BEFORE THEY RETURN, AND IF ALL THAT KEEPS UP, WE'RE GOING TO BE YOU KNOW, THE BUSIEST YEAR WE'VE EVER HAD, WHICH IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE, BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO BE BORED. SO THAT'S THE QUICK PRESENTATION RUNDOWN. ANY QUESTIONS? I LIKE THE MUSIC PROGRAM. I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST WE NAMED ONE OF THE ROBOTS RICK FRANKLIN IN HONOR OF THAT HIGH TECH, RIGHT? SECOND YEAH, TRIBUTE TO TECHNOLOGY, OKAY? OKAY SPENCER. GREAT JOB. THAT'S JUST AMAZING, MAN. ALL THE STUFF YOU GUYS HAVE GOING ON. IT'S JUST TRULY AMAZING AND ALL THE PROGRAMS ALL THE PROGRAMMING, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT JUST A LIBRARY. IT'S A HUGE COMMUNITY SPACE BEYOND JUST BOOKS. THAT'S REALLY AWESOME. COOL STUFF. THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
IF I COULD ASK, COULD YOU MENTION SPENCER THAT A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE LINKEDIN LEARNING ? YES. SO WE ADDED THAT WITH THIS FISCAL YEAR, UM, THEY DON'T HAVE A LOT OF GOOD GRAPHICS, BUT ANYONE WITH A LIBRARY CARD CAN LOG ON AND GET FULL ACCESS TO LINKEDIN LEARNING, WHICH DOES CUZ OFFICIAL CERTIFICATES OF LEARNING TO. FOR I THINK IT ALONE HAS 14,000 DIFFERENT COURSES SO YOU CAN TAKE CUSTOMER SERVICE SALES STORYTELLING THAT THERE ARE MUSIC THEORY. OF COURSE, IS THERE OUR STAFF IS USING IT FOR TRAINING. SO WE'RE STARTING TO ASK STAFF TO COMPLETE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS IN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME AS PART OF THEIR GOALS TO GROW AND WE HAVE ENOUGH TO WHERE EVERYBODY IN MCKINNEY CAN HAVE ACCESS FOR WHAT WE HAVE NOW, SO IT'S JUST SOMETHING YOU KNOW IT'S A TRICKLE AS IT STARTS, BUT ONCE IT STARTS GROWING, WE'VE ALREADY SEEN IT. IT'S JUST LEAPS AND BOUNDS ONCE PEOPLE START USING IT. THANK YOU, SPENCER.
THANK YOU. ALRIGHT. COUNCIL LIAISON UPDATES. ANYBODY HAVE AN UPDATE? IF NOT, WE'RE GOING TO
